Cover Your Assets is a quick-to-learn, quick-to-play card game that does not, I repeat, does NOT have anything to do with sets or runs. While there are some fun ones out there, I usually get tired of them quickly and replay value is low for me. Cover Your Assets is awesome. The story line is simple: protect your assets in the form of baseball cards, jewelry, a classic car, and more…or the coveted gold and silver (worth a lot!). The player whose net worth reaches $1,000,000 first wins (takes several rounds). Now, we all know that in real life, assets get stolen and fought over (either legally or physically!). While I sincerely hope no fist fights break out while playing Cover Your Assets, there will be plenty of thefts and power battles.
Now here’s the rundown: each player has four cards in his hand at all times. A pair of the same asset or an asset with a gold or silver (wild cards) allows you to lay down the pair in front of you. Now, if you lay down a stamp collection pair, for example, anyone else with a stamp collection card (or wild) can opt to steal the pair from you. You can defend it with another stamp collection card (or wild). You then go back and forth until the attacker or the defender concedes (willfully or is forced to concede by not having another card to play). All of those cards used in the skirmish are then added to that stack. You can see how stacks can quickly gain a LOT of value, even in a single player’s turn. Be careful to not use your rare gold or silver cards too early or for little value!
Now, players can only steal another player’s top stack. So, naturally, you want to cover your highest-valued assets as quickly as you can to protect them (hence the name of the game!).
My favorite moments are sneaking in after a hard-fought, costly battle between two other players and effortlessly taking the entire stack…to the chagrin of the previous winner! (Can you think of any historical battles where something like this happened?) =-)
Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you’re getting killed and it’s close to the end of the game. Don’t lose hope! Sometimes that gold mine stack everyone’s had their eye on will be exposed at JUST the right time for you to swoop in and snatch it for the victory. It can be incredibly fulfilling (or incredibly frustrating for the targeted player!).
Overall, Cover Your Assets is a very fun game for gamers and non-gamers alike. It’s casual, it’s interactive, it’s a little mean (okay, it can be a lot mean!), and it’s a lot of fun.
